Jigenji Temple

The first outdoor columbarium surrounded by the lush garden

The exterior walls are made of luxurious granite and tiles. There are two prayer booths with glass eaves so as not to detract the openness.

Jigenji Temple is a Buddhist temple founded at the end of the 13th century, with a large strolling garden with a pond, a tea ceremony pavilion and a pavilion for various seasonal and religious events.

In 2006, Jigenji built a hall called "Jiunkaku" and installed a fixed locker style columbarium to allow people to have their own graves with less cost. As it becomes full, Jigenji decided to build a new facility.

The chief priest wondered if he could create a new type of tomb instead of the one used at Jiunkaku and consulted with Nittoh Sekizai, who then consulted Daifuku for ideas. In response to the chief priest's request to have "a columbarium surrounded by the beautiful lush garden", Daifuku proposed the outdoor columbarium solution.

The new Jōshō-den columbarium, which went into operation in 2017, is the first automated columbarium in the Shikoku area and can hold 297 urns. The temple is a one-minute walk from the nearest bus stop and is close to one of the city's most famous attractions, Takinomiya Park.

Joshoden is open to all religions and denominations with no annual fee or donation requirement. It has been featured on a local television station and has attracted the attention of the community.

Flowers and candles are placed at each worship booth. Visitors can offer prayers in the light of nature.

Customer's Voice

Rest your ancestors in peace without heavy financial burden

Chief priest

As the number of people living in rural areas is decreasing, the question of how to protect their graves has become a major issue. At the same time, there are people moving from other area to Niihama and moving their hometown graves to here, so called "reburial". We built this columbarium with the hope of "creating a facility where people can leave their ancestors in peace with little financial burden.” It is our hope that visitors respect the deceased, enjoying the beautiful seasonal flowers and delicious air around.
