Coop Deli Consumers Cooperative Union

4 types of picking systems based on shipping frequency efficiently process 3000 SKUs

Challenge

Coop Deli Consumers Cooperative Union (Coop Deli) boasts a business scale of 4.75 million members and sales of 525.5 billion yen, with seven co-ops in the Kanto-Shinetsu region as its members. With the change in members' lifestyles, the business has shifted from the former focus on joint purchases to individual home delivery, which now accounts for 70% of the business. As a result, the number of delivery destinations and SKUs has increased significantly, and the picking process has become complicated. In addition, competition with e-commerce and online supermarkets has become fierce, and the need to improve the efficiency and quality of logistics has become more important than ever.

Solution

As part of the reorganization of logistics to cope with such changes in the environment, Coop Deli has started operation of the Funagata Grocery Collection Center. The Funagata Grocery Distribution Center is a distribution base that sorts and boxes room temperature products and bread for Coop Mirai, Ibaraki Coop and Tochigi Coop members. The center has introduced four types of picking systems according to the shipping frequency in order to reduce the workload and save manpower.

Fast moving items: Put-to-Light System + Automatic tote feeder

A pick-to-light picking system “Digital Picking System” combined with the automatic feeders has been adopted for the fast-moving items. When the products picked from the gravity shelves by Digital Picking System are placed on the automatic feeder, the feeder gently drops them into the corresponding order collection box when it arrives. This has improved productivity by allowing picking work to be performed ahead of the collection box arrival.

The automatic feeder table handles the loading of the products into the order collection box after picking.
Inventory replenishment to the gravity shelves is fully automated with stacker cranes.

Medium & Slow moving items: Eye-Navi system with Jungle Cart

Medium-moving items are collected by Eye-Navi system, a digital picking system that combines a wireless display with a collection box. This system minimizes the waiting time of workers by reducing the interval between collection boxes and continuously transporting them.

Slow-moving items are picked in advance using Jungle Cart, a put-to-light cart system. By setting the finished Jungle Carts next to the Eye-Navi line, picking of both medium and slow movers is completed.

Bread: Eye-Navi system with front picking configuration

Breads that are easily squashed and require careful handling are collected by the front-picking style Eye-Navi system. Productivity is further improved by eliminating the need to look back between picking and loading into the collection box.

Shipment: Automatic container stacker

The container stacker stacks the containers on the dolly by shipping direction. Shipping preparations are completed after securing the cargo with bundling bands to prevent it from collapsing.
