AS/RS retrofit, completed in less than five days, stabilizes operations and reduces errors
Showa Aircraft Industry (headquartered in Tokyo) manufactures specially-equipped vehicles including tank lorries, bulk vehicles and accessories for aircraft. In October 2011, the company retrofitted its AS/RSs that store manufactured parts.
In April 1996, a mini load AS/RS and three unit load AS/RSs were installed in the facility making investment control more effective. Fifteen years after the original installation, errors increased because boards on the control devices were worn out. Additionally, service parts of the boards were not available anymore.
The company decided to replace the control devices of the mini load AS/RS and one of the unit load AS/RS with a new model. This upgrade ensures stable operations and a steady supply of service parts, which enables long-term use of the systems.
“This upgrade did not include replacement of the stacker cranes but upgraded control devices only. We replaced the control devices for two stacker cranes first, which are used most often. Upgrading work was conducted without stopping operations, and completed in three days including a weekend. We are satisfied with both time and cost of this upgrade, and after-sales service is always available immediately at the local service center.” said Mr. Masataka Saito, deputy manager of material management department, production management division.
