Basic Stance

Based on the concept that safety is the ultimate priority, Daifuku promotes safety management initiatives within the whole group and its suppliers. In order to eradicate workplace accidents, it is essential to reduce dangers in our offices, machinery, equipment and operations by risk assessment, as well as entrenching a corporate culture that ranks the safety and health of its employees as the highest priority, through safety education for each level of occupational life.
Along with safety, the health of our employees lies at the core of the sustainable development of our business. Therefore, we strive to continuously promote initiatives for the maintenance and enhancement of mental and physical health.

Promotion Framework

Based on the prioritization of safety above everything else, the Central Safety and Health Committee was established directly under the control of the CEO, in order to work towards the eradication of workplace accidents. Beneath this committee, the regional Health and Safety Committees and various expert committees (construction, manufacturing, and procurement) have been set up to secure the safety and health management systems across the Daifuku group. With the aim of continuing our safety culture cultivated over many years, as well as aiming for fundamental safety by thrashing out all the potential risks, Daifuku has obtained the occupational safety and health management system certification (OHSAS 18001) at all its major sites.
We also cooperate and share information with our suppliers through Safety Cooperation Associations and our Health and Safety Seminar in order to carry out initiatives to achieve mutually cultivated safety.

Occupational Safety and Health Management Promotion System

The "Mental & Physical Health Promotion Committee" was established in FY 2006 across the Daifuku Group with the purpose of providing a healthy working environment to our employees, who are our greatest asset. Working in cooperation with industrial doctors, public health nurses and health insurance associations, we support the mental and physical health management of our employees through various exercises, as well as by holding mental health seminars to tackle important issues such as decreasing the diagnosis rate.

Safety Training Facility

Safety Training Facility

We train employees to understand risks, maintain awareness of safety, and take safe action by providing them with simulated experiences of dangers at construction sites and manufacturing sites. We also extend training to our partners' employees in the same manner.

Safety Training Program

Skills, awareness, and knowledge are required to work safely. Our employees take skills training courses taught by external organizations to improve their skills. They also participate in special training courses inside and outside the company to acquire awareness and knowledge. We provide mainly training for operating cranes weighing less than 5t, as well as low voltage training and special training for grinding wheel handling within our company.

Frequency Rate and Severity Rate

We identify accident frequency rate and severity rate as a safety management indicator for the Daifuku Group, share the information, and instruct departments that require improvement in order to raise safety awareness.

Frequency Rate: The number of casualties per one million employee-hours worked. This rate indicates the frequency of accidents.
FY2016 target=0.6, FY2016 result=0.67, FY2017 target=0.222
Severity Rate: The number of lost work days experienced per 1,000 work hours. This rate indicates the severity of accidents.
FY2016 target=0.01, FY2016 result=0.02, FY2017 target=0.003

Mental & Physical Health Promotion Committee

The Mental & Physical Health Promotion Committee was set up in 2006 as an organization that worked across the Daifuku Group. With the CFO as Chairman, the committee organizes and holds health promotion initiatives and events at each office based on the analysis of health check-ups, in cooperation with industrial doctors, public health nurses and health insurance associations. After events are held, we implement the PDCA cycle by effectively analyzing the outcome of the events, as well as making use of the participants’ responses on the questionnaires for future events.

Refreshment Measures

Refreshment Measures

A self-care seminar was held with the theme of "Laughter and Health,” as we focused on the health and relaxation benefits of laughter. In FY 2016, the seminar featured two parts, a lecture by a public health nurse and a Rakugo performance by a professional Rakugo performer.

Mental Health Measures

Mental Health Measures

Line care seminars which incorporated EQ with the mental health training were held 9 times in total at each office in FY 2016. The Line Care Handbook and Self-Care Handbook, revised in 2014, were used for line care seminars, and it is obligatory for all manager-class employees to participate in at least one seminar every three years. We also invited Olympic medalists to give a lecture on developing a strong mindset and how to stay motivated.

*EQ, "Emotional Intelligence Quotient," refers to one’s ability to understand the emotions of oneself and others, and have control over one’s own emotions.

Physical Health Measures

Physical Health Measures

In addition to yoga classes, exercise ball classes and fitness seminars, a Workplace Exercise Program was held at each office where fitness instructors provided lectures on easy exercise and relaxation. In August 2016, a sport and exercise ground was established at the Shiga Works. Equipped with lighting for nighttime use, it includes a multipurpose sports field and is used for club activities as well as in-house communication. In addition, walking events and health check-ups are held regularly.

Dietary Measures

Diet Measures

As diet has a huge impact on one’s health condition and disease prevention, a Cafeteria Improvement Project was established where project members and cafeteria management companies work together to develop and provide healthy menus at offices with cafeterias. A seminar on food education was also held at the Tokyo Head Office, which does not have a cafeteria, with a lecture given by a nutritionist while a health conscious meal was provided.

Support for Employees After Leave

Industrial doctors, public health nurses and the company work together to establish a rehabilitation plan for employees who suffer from mental illness returning to work. The committee examines the current number of employees taking leave of absence in order to consider prevention measures.
