Since Daifuku’s establishment in 1937, we have been involved with material handling. Daifuku has expanded the scope of our business by developing systems and equipment tailored to a variety fields and industries to provide the most appropriate and best solutions by integrating a range of material handling elements such as storage, transport, sorting, picking, and information systems.
In addition to increased investment in distribution in response to the growth of e-commerce, our business environment is expected to keep developing as operations expand and become automated, and there will be increased investments in response to labor shortages the need to improve productivity.
We believe it is vital to consistently improve the quality of products and systems we provide to society to ensure thorough compliance with related laws, regulations and guidelines, and to have appropriate countermeasures in place to provide a sincere response to any unexpected issues arising. We therefore uphold the following as our management philosophy: “Provide the best solutions to benefit the global markets and development of society.”

Promotion Framework

In accordance with the ISO 9001 Quality Management System regulated by ISO (International Organization for Standardization), the pursuit of customer satisfaction is our fundamental policy and we guarantee the quality of our products and services at each stage, from planning, sales, design and manufacturing to installation and after-sales service.
Through management reviews of each business sector, Daifuku conducts quality management system initiatives through the executive management’s revision of the quality assurance system, based on information such as the progress towards all business operation goals and non-conformance management and correction. As for the company-level management review, the president will evaluate and make judgments on the necessity for changes in the quality management system by reviewing the progress made in achieving our product quality goals, in order to strive for continuous improvements.

Obtain ISO 9001 certification for all production sites KPI

Certification was maintained for fiscal 2017.

Defects in products and services (compared to 2014 basic unit) KPI

The target for fiscal 2017 was 90% or less, and the actually achieved figure was 59%. Due to this significant achievement, the target value for the next fiscal year will be reviewed.

Teamwork initiative presentations and improvement proposals

Daifuku places emphasis on teamwork in small groups and improvement proposal activities. We have recorded significant achievements by diligently conducting improvements at our work sites. There were 4,572 proposals for improvement of operations, cost reduction, quality, safety, environment, and other matters made during fiscal 2017.

Group-wide presentation contest

Employee teamwork contests

A highlight is the annual group-wide presentation contest between teams that have passed the preliminary round. The event is attended by members of top management. Teams from Group companies in Japan, China, and U.S. participated in the contest held in March 2018.

Commendation for Science and Technology

A member of the Daifuku Group was awarded Japan’s Prize for Creativity 2018 by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This award is given to those in the field of science and technology who have made notable achievements in creativity and originality that have contributed to improvements in technology, from the perspective of workability, product quality, and cost. Daifuku Group employees have been presented with this award for fourteen consecutive years, with a total of 39 employees becoming recipients.

Daifuku proactively applies for patents and acquisition rights primarily for newly developed products. The progress of globalization has resulted in an increased number of patent applications made outside Japan in recent years.

The goal for fiscal 2017 was 140 inventors, and the actually achieved number was 122. As the number of patent applications has decreased, we will continue to implement measures aimed at promoting invention.

Product Safety (Qualified Internal Safety Assessors) KPI

To ensure the safety of Daifuku's products, the engineering and design divisions conduct risk assessments on existing models and newly developed products in accordance with internal regulations. Furthermore, Daifuku systematically aims at fostering young design staff through product safety-related education conducted by experts, both in-house and from outside. In fiscal 2017, a total of 197 persons obtained the Safety Basic Assessor qualification that has become target in this term. To support our risk assessments from a workplace safety stand point, we are also encouraging persons in charge on manufacturing sites to obtain these qualifications.

  • *Safety Assessor (SA): A person with the basic knowledge and capability required to confirm the adequacy of safety, as well as the ability to judge overall safety adequacy.
    Safety Sub-assessor (SSA): A person with the basic knowledge and capability required to confirm the adequacy of safety.
    Safety Basic Assessor (SBA): A qualification for machinery users. Able to perform a safety patrol and spot safety issues, as well as prevent hazardous modifications to aquipment.

Transfer of technology and skills

Daifuku has a well established a in-house production system and conducts training to develop global personnel and pass along the skills and techniques of experienced personnel to junior employees. We also strive to sustain and improve the necessary techniques for manufacturing by regularly holding tests under the skill evaluation program.
