Daifuku Obtains ISO Certification
for Newly Developed Area Management System
February 17, 2014
Daifuku Co., Ltd. has developed the Area Management System as part of the Project for Practical Application of Service Robots (2009-2013) that is Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). On February 17, the system was certified with the ISO 13482:2014 international safety standard for personal care robots by the Japan Quality Assurance Organization.
Receiving a commission from NEDO to participate in the project, Daifuku undertook the development of a high-speed vehicle system with safety technology for distribution centers since fiscal 2011. In addition to developing a high-speed vehicle that travels at 200 meters per minute, which is about three times faster than conventional vehicles, we concurrently developed the Area Management System to increase safety. By incorporating Ultra Wide Bands (UWB), the Area Management System is able to determine the locations of workers and forklifts in real time and then control the speeds of the vehicles, ensuring safety in the centers.
ISO 13482 is a new standard issued on February 1, 2014, and the system was certified for the first time in the world.
Locations of workers, forklifts and vehicles are determined by using UWB tags. Based on the gathered information, the Area Management System controls the speeds of the vehicles.
The system ensures safety by decreasing the speed of the vehicle to prevent potential collisions, even should a person appear suddenly in front of the vehicle.
